Prairie dogs checking out the sunshine near Canton Lake, Oklahoma. The camping area around the lake was destroyed by a tornado three years ago. It’s in the process of being rebuilt, and a new spillway for the dam has been installed. Despite the destruction caused by the storm and the subsequent ongoing re-construction, with all the attendant noise and heavy truck traffic, these little prairie dogs seem to be totally unaffected. It’s fun to watch them scurry around, chittering and bouncing up and down in alarm when they spy a hawk or other threat, and then dive quickly into their underground homes. Water in the lake remains at a record low level, a result of the continuing drought. Despite that drought, the protected prairie dog population around the lake continues to thrive.
