Philadelphia Mummer’s Day Parade What memories! If my family didn’t get to the city to see the show we could most always (after 1954 when we got a TV set) watch it in the comfort of our own living room. I loved the brilliant, exotic, over-the-top costumes, the dancing and the music of the string bands. No stuffiness there – it was all glitter and exuberance, lively sound and fancy struttin’. New Year’s Day was a day to put away the mundane and celebrate the coming of a new beginning. None of that out here on the windy plains of western OK, but that’s ok too. My husband and I are a bit older now, and a bit more sedate, but we still anticipate that new beginning with hope. We may be moving a bit more slowly, but we still carry a bit of that childish outlook in our hearts, and can thankfully still tap our toes in time to the music. Happy New Year everyone.
